Why your credit card details may not be safe online

December 10, 2007

New evidence has emerged showing that some websites are selling customers personal details, including their credit card details. The shocking evidence shows that some websites are selling personal details for as little as £1.

The worry is that the details are a little more personal than simply giving out your name and address. Companies are allowing criminals to gain access to your pin number, security codes and personal account details. They are given out by illegal hacking websites and because of this criminals have never had it easier.

Consumers are becoming more and more aware of just how big a problem identity fraud is. It has only been recently that the government has lost the details of more than 25 million people claiming child benefits and so this new loss of data does not look good. The government systems are supposed to be 100% secure and nobody should be able to hack into them. So the fact that there are illegal hacking websites which are able to get these details from the government has placed fear into consumers.

Due to these new findings, watchdogs are investigating various organisations. The organisations are not just based in the UK but for the ones which aren’t, they will be investigated using counterparts in the relevant country. If they are found guilty then they will be prosecuted as any lack of protection of consumer’s personal details is a serious offence.

Overall this new security breach has really got consumers worrying about the state of the government security system. It truly is frightening that criminals can get to our banking details as easily as they can. So all eyes will now be on the watchdogs as they carry out their investigations. One thing is definitely clear – the government need to start addressing their security system in order to see where improvements could be made.
