Many people are still paying off credit card debt from last Christmas
December 13, 2007
Christmas comes just once a year, but for many people they spend the whole of next year trying to pay for it. It seems crazy that one day of the year can take over 300 days to pay off. Then before you know it Christmas has come again and the cycle begins once more.
Christmas should be a time that is celebrated and enjoyed. However it should never put you into so much debt that you spend the next year paying it off. So why do we get ourselves into such a mess at Christmas and is it really avoidable?
It is thought that just over 11 billion pounds will be placed onto credit cards this Christmas. The fear is that some people will simply only be topping up their debt that they created last Christmas. This is obviously a major problem as if the debt still hasn’t been paid off from last year and new debt is being added on this year, by the time next year comes the debt will be mounting further still. It is a problem that could quickly get out of hand.
The only way that you can ensure that you will not top up your debt this Christmas is to either cancel your credit card or transfer your balance over. If you have an existing balance it could easily be transferred onto a credit card which has a balance transfer deal. That way you will have more time to pay that off without the interest adding up and you will have a credit card free of any debt that you can use this Christmas.
Overall whilst it is easy to get carried away during the festive period, you should always make sure that you stick to a budget if you want to remain debt free throughout the next year.
