Millions of people resort to paying their mortgage with their credit cards
November 1, 2007
The news that more than a million people have had to resort to paying their mortgage or rent with their credit cards will unfortunately not come as a shock to many people. The housing shelter charity “Shelter” has recently conducted the survey that showed that millions of people are struggling to pay their mortgages and rent each month and their credit cards are their only hope of keeping a roof over their heads.
Now unfortunately once the rent or the mortgage has been paid on the credit card, many people then have no way out of the debt that they have gotten themselves into. The interest rates on the card are just too much for them to handle and so they end up with a debt that spirals quickly out of control. So just how has this problem become so out of control?
The main reason why house owners are struggling to pay their mortgages is because interest rates do keep increasing. What many homeowners are paying now is not what they first agreed to pay each month and that has left them struggling to find the extra money to pay what they now owe. Another reason is because lenders are now sometimes lending people mortgages which are 10x their annual earnings. This is ridiculous and it encourages people to take out a mortgage that they simply cannot afford. All it takes is for one bad month and then the mortgage is simply unaffordable.
Now the figures of the study that was conducted by Shelter mainly show that homeowners have used their card only once to pay their rent or mortgage. Luckily there are not a large number of people who have to resort to using their card each month to pay their rent. However there are still people who do constantly struggle month after month and for them the threat of their debt spiralling out of control is extremely real.
