Southeast London is officially the worst area for credit card fraud
October 16, 2007
When
it comes to fraud, Southeast London has proven to be one of the worst affected
areas within the UK. This is especially true with “card not
present” fraud and it includes fraud over the telephone, internet and
through mail order.
The way in which this data was found, is that a fraud information group known as “Early Warning” tracked fraudulent purchases and the addresses that they were sent to. From that information, Southeast London came back to be one of the worst affected areas.
The type of fraud known as “card not present” is fast becoming a big problem for the people in Southeast London, as well as those around the rest of the country too. It has risen by over 20 percent within the last year alone and it is thought to be costing traders over £200 million a year which is obviously a lot of money! It means that the UK’s economy is seriously suffering and the revenue is losing a lot of money which is only set to become worse if nothing is done about the problem.
It is thought that the reason this type of credit card fraud is getting so common is because the police are unable to find out about it. The crime prevention department which is run by the Government is said to be keeping police out of the loop when it comes to this type of fraud. This means that nothing can be done until it is too late.
The main reason why Southeast London has such a big problem is because it is obviously such a large place. It is closely followed by a lot of the main towns and cities around the UK such as Bristol, Manchester and Liverpool. Generally the more people that there are in a town, the higher the chance that there will be a lot of fraudsters too. So in smaller areas you are less likely to hear about “card not present” fraud than you would in an area such as Southeast London.
Overall this type of credit card fraud is a problem and it seems to be increasing
every single year. As long as the police have a lack of power over the situation,
it is only likely to become worse.
