Moneysupermarket investigates footie credit cards

Financial advice website Moneysupermarket.com has marked the beginning of the new Premiership football season by identifying which it believes to be the "best players in the market" in terms of financial products.

Fans can show loyalty to their club by taking out an affiliated credit card, the site points out, and these borrowers could actually "fare quite well".

Many cards offered by football teams offer zero per cent for 12 months balance transfer deals, on a par with many other products in the market.

The only offer to better this, Moneysupermarket points out, is the GE Money Transformation card, which offers zero per cent on balance transfers as well as purchases for 12 months.

Stuart Glendinning, managing director at Moneysupermarket.com, said: "Many like the kudos of having a club credit card in their wallet.

"And while some products fare ok in comparison to products on the wider market, even the most committed of football fans should shop around for financial products that offer the most suitable and competitive deal and not be swayed by gimmicks, perks, or the love of their club."

Club savings accounts, however, should be red-carded, according to the advice site, as they are uncompetitive in comparison to products on the wider market. Children's savings accounts are described much more favourably, however, as many offer rates which are competitive.
