Wag mania could necessitate a competitive credit card

Owning a credit card with a competitive interest rate on purchases could soon become even more important for customers in the UK, as a report by Scottish Widows has claimed that one in three women want to be a footballer's wife and financially rely on their partner.

According to the financial service provider, this desire to be a Wag – the term coined to describe England's footballers' wives and girlfriends – is most common in Northern Ireland, the south-west and the east of England.

In these areas, Scottish Widows reports, almost half of women believe that their partner should take care of them financially and pay for their lifestyle.

Anne Young, senior marketing manager at Scottish Widows, said: "We are surprised that so many women still want to be financially dependent on their partner in this day and age and are failing to take responsibility for their own financial future.

"It is vital that we [women] are financially savvy whatever our lifestyle and whether we are in a relationship or not. Financial planning should never be out of fashion."

Planning for later life is particularly important for women, according to Scottish Widows, as they can be vulnerable to poverty owing to such possibilities as damaging divorces and not being able to work because of children.

A good credit card is therefore just as important for women who prefer to take care of their own financial lives, rather than relying on a man to make their purchases for them.
