New Laura Ashley cards wrongly sent out
May 21, 2007
The new Laura Ashley store card has caused quite a stir as many consumers have been wrongly sent the new cards.
This is not the first company to be accused of doing this and unfortunately it is not against the law. It seems that consumers who do not want a credit card can get one anyway without even requesting one. This is obviously a publicity stunt by the companies providing the cards and perhaps they hope that even though these customers didn’t originally want a card, now that they have one they may as well use it? Whatever the reasons behind sending the cards out wrongly, it has certainly got a lot of consumers hot under the collar.
This recent mix up with store cards has made some experts call for the Consumer Credit Act to be improved. It has to be flawed in some way in order for these mistakes to be allowed to happen. Various MPs have asked the government to change the Act in the past due to previous errors made but as of yet nothing has been done.
The Laura Ashley store cards are provided by GE Money which is a well known company throughout the UK. It deals with most other store cards too and many people have had run-ins with the company regarding cards being wrongly sent out.
So if you have received a credit card that you do not want what should you do? Well the best advice would be to contact the company either through telephone or through the post. Also cut the card up and that way you cannot use it even if you are tempted. You did not ask for the card so by destroying it you are protecting yourself from credit card fraud and also from the temptation of spending on it later on. You should also contact the company however as otherwise they will keep sending you promotions and news about your account with them.
