Credit cards are the only available help for the elderly
February 6, 2007
Over the past few years people have started to wake up to the fact that pensions these days are not usually enough to get by when they retire. This is mainly down to the fact that people just do not have enough money to save throughout their lives, especially when in order to lead a comfortable life, you need to put away most of your annual salary. With bills, emergencies, food and a thousand other things that can be bought, people just cannot afford to pay anything into their pensions. So just what happens when you cannot afford to live on your pension when you do retire?
Well it seems that many elderly people are forced to apply for credit cards in order to get by. When combining utility bills and everyday expenses, many elderly people do not have anything left and a credit card is needed to tide them over until they next get their pension. So, whilst they may not have the most amount of debt, the elderly are certainly catching up and within a few years it is likely that the elderly will make up a large proportion of the bad debt figures. But what else can they do?
There are a number of factors which lead to the elderly having to rely upon credit cards. In the olden days house prices were not as high and utility bills certainly weren’t. At the start of 2007 utility bills are currently at their highest though price drops are expected over the next few months. However, that does not help the elderly and whilst they may get a little help during the winter months, many still have to pay for a high heating bill which they simply cannot afford.
Overall pensions really are letting people down these days and as long as prices for everything stay as high as they are now, the problem can only really get worse.
