Tesco now cleared of credit card fraud
January 18, 2008
A recent credit card scam in Aylesbury could have been caused by a corrupt shop employee. The scam has caused a number of people’s bank accounts to be stolen and originally Tesco’s was blamed for the scandal. However, now it seems Tesco’s is in the clear which has definitely come as a relief to the company.
The scam was caused by a dodgy chip and pin machine which is actually quite a common way in which fraudsters get consumers details. The machines that replace the original chip and pin machines look identical and they basically read the consumers information when they insert their cards into them. The information that was taken from customers accounts in Aylesbury was used in countries such as Thailand and Canada. Cash was withdrawn and customers were left in financial trouble because of the scam.
Now it seems that the people responsible for the scam could be hard to trace because the details were stolen a while before cash was withdrawn. It is thought that the information was taken at least three weeks before any cash was taken from the accounts. This means that the culprits could have gotten anywhere in that period of time. Even a search of the stores suspected to be part of the scam has not shown any chip and pin devices which could have been used.
The main theory is that fraudsters managed to gain the assistance of a corrupt shop employee. That is usually the most common way in which fraudsters manage to use corrupt chip and pin machines. However the lack of evidence is making it hard for police to really say how the scam occurred. That is certainly not good news for the victims of the scam.
Overall Tesco’s are certainly going to be glad that they are no longer a suspect in the scam. However, it is not good news for the victims or the police who have yet to catch the culprits.
