How to prepare your credit card for Christmas

January 7, 2008

Christmas is coming and if you are like thousands of other people then you will no doubt be keeping your credit card within easy reach. However, before you rush out and spend money that you do not have on your card, there are a number of things that you should do to prepare your credit card for Christmas.

The first thing that you can do is to set a strict budget. That may be difficult to do but it is essential if you want to remain as debt free as possible after Christmas. Set a budget by looking at your credit card limit and if possible setting a target well below your limit. Just because you have £500 to spend it does not mean that you should spend the full £500 on your card. Be responsible and you will find that spending on your credit card can be quite beneficial.

Paying off any previous debt on the card before you spend anything else on it is also a good idea. The cost of Christmas can be quite high and so it is vital that you take into account any money you still currently owe on your credit card. By paying it off it gives you more to spend on Christmas and you will not have the added worry of going over your limit.

Another thing to consider is to switch your credit cards over. There are many different cards available these days and some have really good offers that you could potentially benefit from. Things such as cash back and rewards could be yours and seem as though you will potentially be spending a lot this Christmas, you could really reap in the benefits.

Generally just being more aware of what you are spending will help you to stay on top of things this Christmas. By knowing your limits and by taking up as many offers as possible, you and your credit card can have a relaxed Christmas instead of a debt laden one!
