Nationwide opts to have a greener year in 2007

More and more companies are attempting to help the countries battle with global warming and Nationwide are no different. Hoping to have a greener year, Nationwide has promised to improve online banking and their credit card holders can choose to suppress their statements.

One of these new features includes credit card holders being able to say how much they put onto their credit cards every month. With most credit card companies, they only allow you to either put 100% onto the card or at least a fixed amount each month. However, with Nationwide they are allowing their customers to put in whatever they can afford and the amount can either go up and down as necessary.

Another option the bank is adding is the online statement option. Here credit card customers will be able to see their statements online which will eliminate the need for paper statements. However, for this to properly work, some companies are going to need to change their rules. For example, many people need printed off bank statements because they need to have them for identification reasons or as proof of income. So, even if the bank did not send a printed statement, the customer would still have to print them off to show to various companies when needed. Unless these companies accepted online transfer it would not really make much of a difference.

Obviously the move will help a little, but without extra changes there are still some customers who need printed out statements. However, as an extra incentive, customers who choose to suppress their statements are being given the chance to win £1,000 until the end of January 2007. The option has already been introduced and it is thought that over 200,000 people have chosen to suppress their statements. So, obviously it is working and as small as the change is, it is still likely to have a positive effect on the environment.
