Consumer Debt Helplines Under Pressure After Christmas

January 19, 2006

Two major consumer debt advice centres have reported that they are feeling the strain after Christmas due to the number of calls they have received by people seeking help.

The Citizens Advice Bureau and The Consumer Credit Counselling Service have said that the numbers of calls are more than what is normally expected for January.

In 2004 consumer debt reached a record £1 trillion. This was due to increased lending on properties.

A spokesman from National Debtline, who has received 12000 calls since January 3rd, said that the surge in calls is probably down to more awareness among consumers that help is at hand rather than a major countrywide debt problem.

Calls to debt helplines usually increase sharply after Christmas when people take stock of what they have spent in the lead up to the festive season.

An earlier report has confirmed that consumers are becoming wary of going into further debt when it revealed that debit cards are being used more than.
